Transponder Key (Chip Key)

New Technology

Since the introduction of chip keys (transponder keys) in the late 1990s, car theft has become more difficult—along with key duplication. Few locksmiths have chosen to specialize in duplicating these electronically complex keys, often limiting themselves to vehicles that use traditional mechanical keys.

How does a chip key (transponder key) work?

Simply put, a transponder is a tiny chip hidden inside the black plastic head of your key that operates using radio frequency. When you insert the key into the ignition, the transponder sends a unique, pre-programmed password to your car’s computer via electromagnetic waves. If the password doesn’t match, the car won’t start—making vehicle theft much more difficult with this type of key.
